Hausmannite has the chemistry (Mn+2)(Mn+3)2O 4, Manganese Oxide. It is in the mineral class Oxides. Although Hausmannite would seem to belong to the mineral group Spinel, however it has a distorted Spinel structure that produces a tetragonal symmetry and a basal cleavage not possible in the Spinel group of minerals. Hausmannite occurs as a primary mineral in hydrothermal veins and by metamorphism of manganiferous rocks.
Hausmannite crystal habits include pseudo-octahedral tetragonal dipyramid, where minor pyramidal faces may truncate only the top and bottom points and twinning is common. The dipyramid faces may be striated horizontally. In addition, habits may be granular and massive. The colour is dark brown to black, lustre is sub-metallic to metallic and crystals are opaque. Cleavage is perfect in one direction, basal, fracture is uneven and hardness is 5.5. The crystal system is tetragonal.
Minerals associated with Hausmannite include Psilomelane, Pyrolusite, Bixbyite and other manganese minerals.
Hausmannite is named after the German mineralogist, J. F. L. Hausmann (1782 - 1859).

It improves the body's oxygen supply, absorbs iron, and stabilises health in general. It is an excellent grounding stone. NB Not suitable for prolonged use for those with heart or chronic circulatory dis-ease. It may cause irritation where there is inflammation.

Hematite has the chemistry Fe2O3, Iron Oxide and belongs to the mineral class Oxides and Hydroxides, Hematite group. Hematite is named form the Greek haimatites meaning blood like, an allusion to the red colour of its powder. Legend said that deposits of Hematite formed from the blood that flowed during battles.
Crystals of Hematite include several varieties that each with their own unique names. Hematite Rose has a circular arrangement of bladed crystals, resembling the flower of a rose. Oolitic Hematite is a sedimentary formation, which has a reddish brown colour, an earthy lustre and is composed of small rounded grains. Kidney Ore is the massive botryoidal form, resembling lumpy kidney-like masses. Specularite consists of a micaceous stone that is sparkling silver grey that may have iridescence. In addition, crystals may be bladed, thin to thick and twinned. Usually, Hematite crystals are opaque, red-grey, black, black-grey or silver-grey in colour with a metallic lustre and the crystal system is trigonal.
Minerals associated with Hematite include Jasper, Rutile and Pyrite. Tiger Iron is a sedimentary deposit that is 2.2 billion years old approximately and consists of alternating layers of grey Hematite and Red Jasper, Chert or Tiger Eye. Notable locations include England, Mexico, Brazil and Australia.

Hemimorphite has the chemistry Zn4 Si2 O7 (OH)2 -H2O, Hydrated Zinc Silicate Hydroxide and belongs to the Silicates mineral class, Sorosilicates subclass. Although Hemimorphite is one of the more common Sorosilicates it does have an unusual characteristic, that of polar or hemimorphic crystals from which it gets its name. The crystal structure is such that it produces a different type of termination at each end of the crystal; one end being blunt whilst the other pyramidal. This is not always visible if one termination joins the matrix or another crystal.
Hemimorphite has two common crystal habits. One produces very glassy, clear or white, thin, bladed crystals, often well formed showing many crystal faces whilst the other form produces a blue to blue-green botryoidal crust that resembles Smithsonite or Prehnite. Other colours include green, white, colourless, brown and yellow.
Hemimorphite was originally named Calamine, however this name had been applied to another mineral, Hemimorphite was proposed is now in general use. The name is apt because hemi means half and morph means shape: an allusion to its dual crystal termination formation. Hemimorphite is strongly pyroelectric and piezoelectric.
