Labradorite Healing Energies and Mineralogy

Labradorite Healing Energies and Mineralogy

Labradorite helps develop intuition, mediumistic abilities and the ability to see auras. It cleanses, balances and protects the aura. It stimulates the imagination and enthusiasm, and enhances patience. Labradorite helps those feeling depressed or anxious, particularly during challenging times, by encouraging optimism and a 'can do' attitude. It protects against & alleviates colds. It benefits those with rheumatic illnesses & gout and can help reduce blood pressure.

Labradorite has the chemistry Ca(50-70%) Na(50-30%) (Al, Si)AlSi2 O8, Calcium Sodium Aluminum Silicate and is a member of the mineral class Silicates, sub-class Tectosilicates and group Feldspars. Labradorite is a member of the plagioclase series of minerals, which comprises of Feldspars that range in chemical composition from pure NaAlSi3 O8 (Sodium, Aluminum, Silicon) to pure CaAl2 Si2 O8 (Calcium Aluminum, Silicon). To be defined as Labradorite it must contain 50-70% Calcium in the Sodium/Calcium position of the crystal structure.
Although Labradorite can look plain and dull, when moved, it flashes glorious colours. This manifests because of a play of light across cleavage planes and in sliced sections. This play of light is called labradorescence (after the mineral itself). This occurs because Labradorite has two distinct layers made through temperature changes in its growth. When light enters the mineral it is refracted back and forth through the deeper layers. This slows the light wave down and changes the wavelength and therefore the colour of the light ray, so that it is different from that which entered the mineral. The colours seen include vibrant blues, violets, greens, golds and oranges.
Habits include well-formed coarse-sized crystals, anhedral to subhedral granular crystals in the matrix, and striated parallel lines on the crystal surface or cleavage face. Colour is grey, colourless, white, light green, lustre is dull to vitreous and crystals are transparent to translucent. Cleavage is perfect in one and good in another direction forming nearly right-angled prisms, fracture is conchoidal and hardness is rated as 6 - 6.5. The crystal system is triclinic.
Minerals associated with Labradorite include Biotite, Pyroxene and Hornblende. Notable locations include Scandinavian Peninsula and Labrador, Canada, after which it is named.

Lapis Lazuli (Lazulite) Energies and Mineralogy

Lapis Lazuli (Lazulite) Energies and Mineralogy

Lapis Lazuli enhances spiritual development by promoting self-awareness and honesty (being true to the Self), and behaving from these higher concepts. It is a highly protective stone. It is excellent for meditation (place on third eye or above the crown). Lapis Lazuli helps with problems of the neck, vocal cords and larynx. It lowers blood pressure and regulates the functioning of the thyroid gland.

Lazulite (Lapis Lazuli) has the chemistry (Mg, Fe)Al2(PO4)2(OH)2, Magnesium Iron Aluminum Phosphate Hydroxide and belongs to the mineral class Phosphates. It is easily confused with Lazurite and Azurite, particularly when looking at colour only, however Azurite is reactive to acids, and Lazurite forms different crystals to Lazulite.
Lazulite is a rock, not a mineral, as it is a complex aggregate of other minerals. The deep blue colouring of Lazulite varies from stone to stone and is dependant on the specific proportions of the minerals it contains. These minerals are Hauynite, Sodalite, Noselite and Lazurite, which is an amorphous mixture of Hauynite and Sodalite. Calcite is always present. It usually contains golden coloured flecks of pyrites. The white flecks are usually Calcite. The deep blue colour is mainly due to the presence of Hauynite.
Lazulite is in a solid solution series (a set of two or more minerals that have some elements that substitute freely for each other) with the mineral Scorzalite. Lazulite is rich in Magnesium whilst Scorzalite is rich in Iron. The rarer Scorzalite tends to be darker, less transparent and denser than Lazulite.
The colour of Lazulite ranges from a gorgeous, dark azure-blue through to pale blue, lustre is vitreous to dull, specimens are translucent and the crystal system is monoclinic. Habits include well-shaped monoclinic dipyramidal to tabular crystals, granular and massive. Cleavage is distinct in one direction, fracture is uneven and hardness is 5.5 - 6.
Lazulite has been known since ancient times; its historical source being high in the Badakhshan mountains in north-eastern Afghanistan where it has been worked for over 6,000 years. It is opaque and slightly soft, so is rarely faceted. Its name derives from the Latin lapis meaning stone, and the Persian lazhward, which means blue.
Minerals associated with Lazulite are Andalusite, Brazilianite, Corundum, Garnets, Kyanite, Muscovite, Quartz, Rutile, Siderite and Wardite. Notable locations include Western Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, California and Yukon Territory, Canada.
