Ulexite has the chemistry NaCaB5O6(OH)6-5H2O, Hydrated Sodium Calcium Borate Hydroxide and is a member of the mineral class Carbonates, subclass Borates. Ulexite, like other borates, is a structurally complex mineral. The basic structure of Ulexite contains chains of sodium, water and hydroxide octahedrons, which are linked together by calcium, water, hydroxide and oxygen polyhedra and massive boron units.
Ulexite crystal habits include tufts of acicular crystals, similar to Okenite and closely packed parallel fibrous crystals. The latter habit displays an optical phenomenon where the fibers behave like optical fibers and transmit an image from one side of the specimen to the other. Try reading a newspaper through the Ulexite, the text will appear to be on the top of the Ulexite!
Ulexite crystals are white grey or colourless with a silky lustre and are transparent to translucent. The crystal system is triclinic, cleavage is perfect in one direction, fracture is fibrous and hardness is 2.

Uvarovite has the chemistry Ca3Cr2(SiO4)3, Calcium Chromium Silicate and belongs to the mineral class Silicates, subclass Nesosilicates, Garnet group. Uvarovite is formed from the metamorphism of impure siliceous Limestones and other rocks that contain Chromium, as are all the Calcium Garnets. It is the only consistently green Garnet, as well as being the rarest.
In accord with other Garnets, Uvarovite forms rounded crystals with 12 rhombic or 24 trapezoidal faces or combinations of these, massive and granular. Crystals are transparent to translucent, lustre is vitreous and the colour is bright green. The crystal system is isometric. .
Minerals associated with Uvarovite include Chromite and Serpentine. Notable locations include Finland, Russia, South Africa and Spain. It was discovered in 1832 and is named after Count Sergei Semenovitch Uvarov (1765-1855), a Russian statesman and amateur mineral collector. |
