Zircon (not to be confused with the artificial gem material Cubic Zircona) has the chemistry ZrSiO4, Zirconium Silicate and is a member of the mineral class Silicates, Subclass Nesosilicates. Typically, a simple Zircon crystal is a tetragonal prism terminated with four-sided pyramids at each end, however the prism may be lacking. Colours may be brown, red, yellow, green, blue, black, and colourless and if heated treated, beautiful blue and gold. Crystals are transparent to translucent and have an adamantine lustre. Cleavage is indistinct in two directions, fracture is uneven and hardness is 7.5. The crystal system is tetragonal. Associated minerals of Zircon include Albite, Biotite, Garnets, Xenotime and Monazite. Notable locations include Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Ontario, Canada and New Jersey and Colorado, USA. | Zoisite Healing Energies and MineralogyZoisite encourages individuality and the realisation of your own ideas. Zoisite (Thulite) has the chemistry Ca2Al3(SiO4)3(OH), Calcium Aluminum Silicate Hydroxide and is a member of the mineral class Silicates, subclass Sorosilicates, Epidote group. Zoisite, like all Epidote minerals, is a structurally complex mineral having both single silicate tetrahedrons, SiO4, and double silicate tetrahedrons, Si2O7. Zoisite has been known for nearly 200 years, however the blue gemstone variety known as Tanzanite (after the country of origin Tanzania) was found as recently as 1967. The pink variety of Zoisite is named Thulite after Ultima Thule, the old Greek name for Norway, where it was first discovered in 1820. Thulite is usually found in as massive. A brilliant green variety of Zoisite is associated with medium grade rubies, which are often distorted and irregularly spread throughout stone. Crystal habits include long, prismatic or tabular crystals often having poor terminations, massive or granular. Zoisite crystals are transparent to translucent, lustre is vitreous and the crystal system is orthorhombic. Cleavage good in one direction lengthwise, fracture is uneven to conchoidal and hardness is 6 - 7. Minerals associated with Zoisite include Calcite, Biotite, Hornblende, Quartz, Corundum, Andradite Garnets and other metamorphic minerals. Notable locations include Tanzania, Tennessee, USA, Switzerland, India and Austria. |
